The Enlightened Smoker’s Guide to Quitting $8.48 This revolutionary approach to smoking cessation is based on the premise that a smoker is more likely to kick the habit if he feels good about himself. When a smoker understands why he commenced smoking, and why smoking no longer delivers the same sense of pleasure and satisfaction it used to, the process of quitting begins. A state of mind called "pleasurable forgetfulness" makes the smoker less interested in smoking while absorbed in other activities. This proven but unorthodox method does not foster the shame and guilt so prevalent in other programs and succeeds where more traditional approaches have failed, producing smoke-free success for thousands of former smokers. |

Smoke: A Global History of Smoking $42.98 Human beings have always smoked, and they probably always will. Every culture in recorded history has smoked something, whether as a cure or for pleasure, whether as part of a ritual or as an aspect of popular culture. It is curious, then, that no history of smoking has been written based on the assumption that smoking – in all of its forms and products – is a cultural phenomenon common to all human societies. "Smoke: A Global History of Smoking" examines the culture of smoking in different traditions and locations around the world. From opium dens in Victorian England to tobacco in Edo period Japan, and from ganja and cocaine to Havana cigars, "Smoke" encompasses the subject as no book has before. Based in cultural history, it employs a large number of images as part of its evidence: around 300 illustrations document smoking and smokers of many substances including tobacco, scented cigarettes, marijuana, opium and cocaine. The various essays examine the changing role of smoking in high and popular culture, ranging from images used in advertising to the legal and moral critiques of smoking, and from opera to the internet. "Smoke" will appeal to all those who smoke, all those who used to smoke, and all those who have tried, and failed, to give it up. |

If a Caveman Can Quit Smoking, Why Not Me? $15.98 Without a doubt this is one of the most comprehensive self-help books on the market today. It’s not just another "how-to-quit" smoking manual. As tobacco prices continue to escalate, now is time to seriously consider breaking this cycle of addiction. In this book, Douglas uses a variety of familiar anecdotes to teach, admonish, and to persuade his readers that they can tailor a practical plan for quitting. His clear, descriptive language and candid story-telling will entice you to read the book in its entirety. Further, he introduces a proven strategy which you will find both useful and trustworthy. The information is both factual and credible, and his method for quitting is duplicable. Without bias, he describes a variety of cessation options for the smoker. However, his main focus is employing the "cold turkey" method for quitting the habit of smoking. This method not only saves you money, but it also minimizes the amount of psychological and physical discomfort associated with withdrawal and abstinence. The book builds on the premise: to successfully QUIT SMOKING you must STOP THINKING about it. |

Thank You For Smoking (Fullscreen) $12.73 The directorial debut from Jason Reitman, the media satire Thank You for Smoking stars Aaron Eckhart as Nick, a man who has turned spinning news and information into a successful career for the tobacco lobby. He plots strategies with his colleagues (Maria Bello and David Koechner) on how to make other dangerous products more appealing to the American public. Nick ends up going to Hollywood with his young son (Cameron Bright) in order to get a movie producer to include characters smoking in his newest film. Nick is kidnapped by a vigilante group concerned about the harmful nature of his product. The cast includes William H. Macy as a Senator who runs on a strong anti-tobacco position, Rob Lowe as the Hollywood bigwig, and Robert Duvall as the king of the tobacco industry. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Christopher Buckley. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi are responsible for. The smooth-talking Naylor’s next big adversary is Vermont senator Ortolan Finistirre (William H. Macy), who is calling for the government to place a skull and crossbones and the word Poison on all cigarette boxes. At the same time, Naylor is sent out to Hollywood to make a deal with high-powered agent Jeff Megall (Rob Lowe) to get more stars to smoke in movies, like in the good old days. All the while, Naylor is trying to establish a better relationship with his young son, Joey (Cameron Bright), without playing down his highly questionable job. The strong cast also includes Kim Dickens as Naylor’s ex-wife, J.K. Simmons as his boss, Katie Holmes as a sexy reporter, Sam Elliott as the former Marlboro Man now dying of lung cancer, and Robert Duvall as the Captain, an old-time tobacco chief who takes Naylor under his wings. THANK YOU FOR SMOKING is a very funny satire that will leave audiences gasping for breath from laughing so hard. |

Smoking, Culture and Economy in the Middle East $105 In this original and thought-provoking book, Relli Shechter examines the emergence of 'modern' markets in the complex social environment of the Middle East. Focusing on the tobacco market in Egypt, he looks at how markets interact with the society, politics and culture of the region. The history of Egypt's smoking habits – from the water pipe to the Marlboro – closely mirrors wider socio-economic developments in the country. Shechter begins his story by looking at the entrepreneurial Ottoman elite who produced luxury cigarettes for export worldwide. He then looks at the role of tobacco products in forming class consciousness in the domestic market, based on the idea that "you are what you smoke". Finally he looks at the politics of smoking in the context of contemporary economic globalisation. Shechter engages energetically with cutting-edge social and economic theories in telling the story of Egypt's tobacco markets. The result is a fascinating book which contains a wealth of newly uncovered material. "Smoking, Culture and Economy in the Middle East" will stimulate and inform anyone interested in political economy, social change and the Middle East region. |

The Psychopharmacology of Smoking $60.98 Why do individuals smoke? In discussing this central question, the authors first examine a number of studies of the complex interaction between the toxicology of smoking and genetically based susceptibility to smoking-related disease, which suggest that the link between smoking and disease is more equivocal than recent epidemiological studies have claimed. Several theories of smoking recruitment and maintenance are considered and judged in the light of the known pharmacological effects of nicotine, a psychoactive drug that is the primary reinforcer in smoking. A review of psychological and behavioural evidence from animal and human studies indicates that nicotine can promote psychological comfort and performance enhancement in a variety of tasks; such effects are produced by self-titration, evidenced in smoking style, which itself is subject to some genetically imposed constraints. The effectiveness of smoking intervention and cessation strategies is assessed, and some improvements suggested, against the background of these putative smoking motives. The book is of value to pharmacologists, psychologists, and specialists in the treatment of drug abuse and in preventive health. |

The Smoking Book $10.5 The Smoking Book is a dreamlike structure built on the solid foundation of two questions: how does it feel to smoke, and what does smoking mean? Lesley Stern, in an innovative, hybrid form of writing, muses on these questions through intersecting stories and essays that connect, expand, and contract like smoke rings floating through the air. Stern writes of addictions and passionate attachments, of the body and bodily pleasure, of autobiography and cultural history. Smoking is Stern’s seductive pretext, her way of entering unknown and mysterious regions. The Smoking Book begins with intimate and vivid accounts of growing up on a tobacco farm in colonial Rhodesia, reminiscences that permeate subsequent excursions into precolonial tobacco production and postcolonial life in Zimbabwe, as well as dramatic vignettes set in Australia, the United States, Scotland, Italy, Japan, and South America. Stern has written a book, at once intensely personal and kaleidoscopically international, that weaves the intimate act of a solitary person smoking a cigarette into a broad cultural picture of desire, exchange, fulfillment, and the acts that bind people together, either in lasting ways or through ephemeral encounters. The Smoking Book is for anyone who has ever smoked or loved a smoker (against their better judgment); it is for those who have never smoked or for those who mourn the loss of cigarettes as they would grieve for a lost friend. But mostly, The Smoking Book is for all those who are smoldering still. |
